Temporomandibular
Joint (TMJ)
The hinge or joint directly
in front of the ear is called the TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINTor TMJ
for short. This joint is where the
lower jaw or mandible connects with the skull. Unfortunately, due
to the complexity of this joint, many problems can and often do
arise. These problems can involve the bones, muscles, cartilage,
ligaments, or tendons associated with the joint.
The term TMD or
TEMPOROMANDIBULAR DISORDER is used to describe any number of
problems associated with one or more of these parts. It is crucial
that
during a comprehensive dental examination, the function of this
joint and its inter-relationship with the jaw muscles and "bite" be
thoroughly evaluated before any extensive restorative or cosmetic
dental treatment is initiated. In this way, potential or actual
problems can be identified and, if necessary, treated.
It is the
goal of Cosmetic Dentistry of Tampa Bay to thoroughly diagnose
and plan each case before treatment is initiated. Only in this
manner can the patient be sure that everything possible has been
done to avoid any problems that could later jeopardize the results
and longevity of treatment.
